There’s Moisture in the Hair!

by The Salon on April 24, 2012

“April Showers Bring May Flowers”. This season is a time for cute Wellington boots and pretty umbrellas. The rainy days aren’t always the best time to get started on your base tan but it’s great for getting the grass and flowers growing healthy and green! Think about this time of the year as a time to let it rain on your hair! Think: MOISTURE! Once summer arrives our hair tends to dry out and become brittle and sun damaged. Get your hair slicked up before that sun starts beating down!

There are a number of things you can do to get your hair super conditioned before the summer, both at home and in salon.

In Salon:
Conditioning Treatments- REDKEN offers amazing chemistry treatments that are done in-salon. Each treatment is personalized for every guest according to their individual hair type. Come and visit nir.va.na. today for a chemistry system consultation!

At Home:
Conditioning Treatments- REDKEN offers many take-home treatments which can be used along with the in-salon conditioning treatments. Each treatment is formulated differently for individual hair types. So come into nir.va.na today and chat with your REDKEN professional about getting that hair back into moisture shape!

2012 Mirror Awards

by The Salon on April 5, 2012

Glamor, fashion and beauty describes the crowd that attended the 2012 Mirror Awards in Toronto this past weekend.

Creativity, balance and talent describes the competition.

This Canadian hairdressing award show prevailed as the  best in the country. With categories from Avant Garde, Fantasy and Colourist of the year, it has drawn out the competitive side in me and has also inspired me to consider taking this challenge next year.

Twists and Braids: As always you can create pretty embellishments with your own hair by twisting and braiding your locks. A pretty braid framing the face is always romantic and sexy (see Valentino). Try twisting BIG sections of your hair up and off your neck and pinning them at the back of your head. Keep these styles loose and pulled out a bit so it doesn’t look slicked down to your head, the look you want to achieve is romantic and easygoing.

Bold Brows: This season try bringing out those brows! Eyebrows frame the eyes so deepening the hue a bit tends to emphasize those pretty peepers! It’s not necessary to take it super bold like the looks we are seeing on the runway just a shade darker will do. A powder is easiest to work with and a brow brush is a must. Work the brush with the grain of the hair, up and out following the shape of the eyebrow. Try it out and see how is transforms your face. (Derek Lam has some great looks to check out!)

*Stylist’s Tip* Ensure that your brows are properly shaped all the time to keep from having the look be too strong.

Quick up-do’s: We’re seeing a lot of the wet look on the runways this season. This may be tricky for some to try, but a simple way to incorporate this into your everyday style is to pull your hair back into a chic up-do. Try applying a foam or light gel to the hair and finger comb it back at the nape of the neck into a simple knot or twist. Put your hair up when it is still slightly damp so it holds that moisture where you have applied the product. Keep the look simple as if you have just tossed it up after getting out of the shower. (check out Chanel for inspiration).

*Stylist’s Tip* To add some pretty flair to this look embellish your up-do with a hair accessory or braid.

Sexy Cat Eyes: This season, the iconic cat eye is back! Use a bold black liner to line the top lid, extending a bit further than the lid. Be sure to sweep the liner away from the eye so it doesn’t look harsh. Then apply as many coats of volumizing mascara as you desire! Keep the rest of the lid bare (except for a hint of concealer or tinted moisturizer) to keep the look super dramatic. (Take a peek at the sexy Dolce & Gabbana look).

Natural Waves:  Stick straight locks are not the best for spring time; this season is all about easy casual looks. Try leaving some of your natural wave or curl to bounce around instead of breaking out the flatiron. Let your hair dry natural or diffuse it with a mousse or gel then if you so desire, add in a few loose wavy pieces with a curling iron. Check out the texture used by Giles or Isabel Marant.

*Stylist’s Tip* A great texture product that adds sexy matte movement to the hair is Redken’s Wool Shake.

Candy Coloured Lips: This trend can be a bit tricky to pull off because different colours suit different people and it’s sometimes difficult to pinpoint which shade would look best on you. A good tip to remember is that cool tones go well with cool skin and eye colours and warm tones go well with warmer skin and eye shades. Experiment with different colours to see what best suits you. A classic bold red is always a classic look. Or if you’re feeling adventurous and it suits your look try a bold pastel pink or subtle purple colour like Emma stone

Sexy Springtime Beauty To-Do’s!

by The Salon on March 14, 2012

Spring is all about tossing off those puffy winter coats and harsh wooly fabrics and showingoff some of your beauty that has been hidden away during the harsh winter months. It’s a time to incorporate bright colours and pretty patterns into your wardrobe and dust off those funky shades we reserve for the warmer months of the year. When it comes to hair and make-up for spring everyone should adopt their own signature style but it’s still fun to try a new style or look that you may not have wanted to experiment with during more drab months. Here are some easy trendy looks to experiment with!

Ponytails: ponytails are a constant staple in every female’s hairstyle idea closet but there are always new ways to adapt this style to freshen it up. The ponytails this spring are worn lower and smoothed down around the face. Experiment with the pony-bun (as seen by Marc Jacobs and Missoni) or breaking it up into a few smaller ponytails going down the head (seen by Herve Leger). Keep it simple, light and fresh.

Stay Tuned for more Springy Tips!

The Oscars!

by The Salon on February 29, 2012

Enough time has gone by since the Oscars to have heard every opinion imaginable about who rocked their look and who failed miserably at their attempts. The same person can be “worst dressed” AND “best dressed” depending on what magazine or website you flip through. My thoughts on who deserves positive feedback on the red carpet goes like this…

Dress for your body type: for example; Angelina Jolie cover up your stick arms and show off that sexy leg! Melissa Macarthy’s long and flowy gown was perfect!

Wear a colour that compliments your skin tone: Ladies like Ellie Kemper, Emma Stone and Michelle Williams followed this rule beautifully!

Wear a hairstyle that suits your face shape as well as your entire look: Rooney Mara’s edgy hair and classic dress did not suit one another,

and Cameron Diaz seemed to forget she was at the Oscars!

Short hair on Michelle Williams is just as sexy as long hair on Stacy Keibler.

Men are wearing skinny pants and having fun with their hairstyles.

So to sum up, coming from a stylist’s point if view, wear what is flattering to you. There is nothing wrong with following trends and looking up to the stars for inspiration,  but be realistic!
